Description
The American Elm is found throughout Eastern North America, growing best on rich well-drained loamy soils. It is often found growing alongside other hardwoods that prefer moist sites including silver and red maple, green and black ash, white oak and cottonwood. Unfortunately this beautiful forest and shade tree is susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease, a wilt fungus which is spread by the elm bark beetle. This fast-growing, hardy tree once dominated urban streetscapes, prized for the shade it produced from its vase-like crown. Unfortunately, many of these street trees ended up succumbing to Dutch Elm Disease from the 1960’s to the 1980’s. Currently in Canada, Alberta and British Columbia are the only two provinces that are free of Dutch Elm Disease.
