Description

Amur Maple is a shrub-like tree that is native to eastern Asia. It is often planted as an ornamental in gardens and is favoured for its fall foliage when the leaves turn brilliant red. A hardy tree recommended by landscapers as it can withstand heavy pruning, transplants easily and can be adapted to grow in either full sun or light shade. It is not a popular street or shade tree due to its small height and tendency to produce multiple trunks. It adapts well to a variety of soil conditions but prefers moist, well-drained soil. Pests and diseases do not pose serious problems for this tree, though it tends to be damaged easily by ice and storms. The amur maple was introduced to Canada and the US around 1880 and is commonly seen in Ontario and Quebec. (Source: Focus on Forests)
