Description

The Hop Tree is also known as common hoptree and can be found in Canada in southern Ontario along the Lake Erie shoreline and in the United States from eastern Pennsylvania to northern Florida. It is a small tree or large shrub that prefers areas of high natural disturbance along shorelines in full sun and relies on insect pollination for reproduction. It is one of two native species occurring in Canada on which the larvae of the rare Giant Swallowtail butterfly feeds. It is a threatened species in Ontario due to its small population and limited geographic locations where it survives. (Source: COSEWIC)
