Description

The Red Ash is also known as green ash and is a species of ash native to eastern and central North America. It is a medium-sized tree reaching 12-25 m, occasionally growing up to 35 m. The bark is smooth and grey on young trees, becoming thick and fissured with age. The leaves are 15-30 cm long with 7-9 (occasionally 5-11) leaflets that are green and turn golden yellow in autumn. It is the most widely distributed of all the ashes and can be found on a variety of sites and growing conditions. The large seed crops are a valuable source of food for wildlife. It is one of the most widely planted ornamental trees in North America due to its good form and resistance to disease. It is however under threat by the Emerald Ash Borer . Its wood is very similar to that of the white ash and is often marketed together. (Source: Wikipedia )
