Description

The Red Mulberry is a small tree or large shrub that can be found across the eastern to central United States to extreme southern Ontario where it is considered a Species At Risk. It can be found growing on a variety of soils but does prefer well-drained, moist soils along stream beds. Associated forest cover can include American sycamore, American elm, red maple, and white ash. Red Mulberry is unique in that it is pollinated by the wind. Its large, sweet fruits can be used in jellies, jams, pies and drinks. The fruit is also favoured by wildlife including birds, raccoons, squirrels and opossum. Red Mulberry does hybridize with its Asian counterpart, the white mulberry, which poses its greatest threat to extinction. (Source: Silvics of North America )
