Description

The Red Spruce, also known as yellow spruce, West Virginia spruce, eastern spruce, is one of the more important conifers in the northeastern United States and Canada. It is a medium-sized tree that may grow to be more than 400 years old. It will grow on many sites that are unfavourable for other species, such as organic soils overlying rocks in mountainous locations, steep rocky slopes, thin soils, and wet bottomland. Associated forest cover may include balsam fir, black spruce, aspen, paper birch, pin cherry, eastern white pine, eastern hemlock, sugar maple, beech, and yellow birch. It is a medium-sized tree and at maturity can reach heights of 18-23 m, and 30-60 cm in DBH. The wood of red spruce is chiefly used for lumber and pulpwood, with limited amounts going into poles piling, boatbuilding stock, and cooperage stock. It is also the preferred wood for piano sounding boards, guitars, mandolins, organ pipes and violin bellies. (Source: Silvics of North America)
